FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what people ask most.

Is it safe to download?

Yes. Download the game only from this site. Each download lists its SHA-256 checksum, so you can check that your file is exactly the one we published, and a VirusTotal report where one is available. How to check your download.

Why does Windows or macOS warn me about it?

Because the game is not yet signed with a paid code-signing certificate, Windows and macOS cannot tell who made it, so they ask you to confirm the first time it runs. That is the only reason for the warning. It does not mean anything is wrong with the game, and it does not mean anyone is trying to hack you.

Install help shows each step: on Windows, More info then Run anyway; on a Mac, Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

Is it free?

Yes, for now. Download Nations Reborn from this site and play it, alone or online, without paying.

Does single player need the internet?

No. Single player against computer players works offline. Only online multiplayer needs an internet connection.

Which platforms does it run on?

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit (an installer).
  • macOS 11 or later on a Mac with Apple Silicon, M1 or newer (a disk image). Intel Macs are not supported.
  • Linux on x86_64 with Vulkan graphics drivers (an archive).

It is a game for computers: it does not run on phones or tablets. See the system requirements.

How many players can play together?

Up to 24 players in one game, any mix of people and computer players, on maps up to the Gigantic World of 2160 × 1080 tiles.

How do updates work?

The game tells you when a new version is out: when it starts, and you are online, it checks for one, and a notice on the main menu shows What’s new and links to the Download page. Download the new version and install it over the old one:

  • Windows: run the new installer.
  • macOS: drag the new Nations Reborn into Applications and replace the old one.
  • Linux: extract the new archive and run the game from it.

When a new version is needed to keep playing online, the notice says so. What changed in each version is in the patch notes.

Where are my saves kept? Will I lose them when I update?

Your saved games and settings are kept in your own user folder, apart from the game’s files, so updating the game does not touch them:

  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Nations Reborn
  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Nations Reborn
  • Linux: ~/.local/share/Nations Reborn

Does the game collect data about me?

Only if you say so. The game asks once whether it may share anonymous usage and performance data, and shares nothing unless you agree; you can change your answer at any time in Settings. Online games send your display name, chat and game commands to the game server. The privacy policy has the details.
